New short film shows how alcohol interlocks can save lives [Video]

Mon, 17/04/2023 - 07:24
Global Road Safety

Watch the new short film released by the European Transport Safety Council that demonstrates how alcohol interlocks can save lives and change the lives of those who use them.

The European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) recently debuted a new short film emphasizing the importance of preventing drunk driving through alcohol ignition interlock (BAIID), also known as ignition interlock device (IID). These devices are directly installed in the vehicle and require drivers to take a breath test before driving. The BAIID stops the car from starting if the driver's blood alcohol concentration is over a particular threshold (often 0.02%).

In several European countries, such as Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Lithuania, Poland, and Sweden, convicted drivers can opt for an alcohol lock instead of a driving ban. In ETSC's short film, you can watch the story of two participants of the Belgian alcohol interlock rehabilitation program who explain how using an alcohol interlock changed their relationship with alcohol and helped them stop drunk driving.

In Europe, about 25% of road deaths are alcohol-related. As a result, starting July 2022, all new vehicle types introduced in the EU must be equipped with the capacity to install an alcohol ignition interlock device. ETSC also calls for more countries to introduce alcohol interlock rehabilitation programs for drink-driving offenders.
